Quick Q and A!

Which aspects do you think makes a person unique?

What aspects make a person unique?
Interesting question. One with a hundred different answers, depending on what part of being human you want to focus on.
My mind went straight to the nature versus nurture debate, probably because being a mum of twins gives me a perspective on that which not everyone gets to have. I raised my twins the same, in the same home, with the same love, the same rules, the same family, and yet they are completely different in some ways. One is naturally physically affectionate and says “I love you Mum” freely and often. The other is not affectionate at all and doesn’t really like saying “I love you” either.
That’s always fascinated me. It makes me think nature has a stronger hand than people sometimes want to admit.
But then again, what makes a person unique goes far beyond that debate.
It might actually be a shorter answer to ask how people are the same, because human beings are so individually shaped by everything within them. The way we love. The morals and ethics we cling to. The values that guide the way we move through the world. The way we show empathy, respect and remorse. Or sometimes don’t.
Even resilience looks different on different people. Someone can feel like they’re barely surviving, just quietly trying to keep their head above water, while someone else looks at them and sees strength. Sees courage. Sees someone holding themselves together far better than they realise.
The books we love, the films we watch, the things that comfort us, the things that challenge us, the things that make us laugh, cry, pull back, open up, trust, fear, hope. All of it leaves its mark.
Every experience, every wound, every joy, every belief, every preference, every softness and every defence mechanism. That’s the stuff that makes us who we are.
That’s what makes us unique.
And honestly, how boring would this world be if we were all the same?
Anybody else have twins and experienced this stark contrast?

My boys!
