What is the best concert you have been to?
Wham, in 1985.
Even now, after seeing some of the biggest names in music, I would still say the best concert I’ve ever been to was Wham in 1985.
I was an avid Elvis fan growing up, so George Michael was probably the first living person I ever had a huge crush on. And not a mild crush either. The full dramatic version. I was young, completely caught up in it, and absolutely capable of believing that if he looked into the crowd, he might somehow spot me and fall instantly in love.
Naturally, that did not happen.
But that is probably part of why the concert has stayed with me all these years. It was not just about the music. It was about being young enough to feel everything in a bigger way. The excitement started long before the show itself, and once it began, the whole place just seemed to explode with energy.
Every time George Michael moved a muscle, the audience screamed. Not sang along nicely. Screamed. The atmosphere was electric from start to finish. It was full of dancing, fun, noise, joy and that kind of shared excitement that you never really forget. Everyone was completely in it.
Since then, I’ve seen huge names including Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Billy Joel, so it is not as if I have nothing to compare it to. Those were massive concerts and incredible performers. But Wham was different. Maybe because I was young. Maybe because it was George Michael. Maybe because everything feels bigger and brighter at that age. Probably all of it.
What I remember most is the vibe. Pure fun. Pure joy. No overthinking, no cynicism, just that feeling of being swept up in something exciting and unforgettable.
So yes, out of every concert I’ve ever been to, Wham in 1985 still wins. Not because it was the most important or the most sophisticated show, but because of how it felt. And sometimes that is exactly what makes something the best.
