What’s a book that completely surprised you?

What’s a book that completely surprised you?

The Secret Garden comes to mind.

I don’t think I expected it to stay with me the way it did. At first, I thought it was just going to be a simple children’s story, but it turned into something much richer than that.

There was the old house, the locked garden, the mystery of what had been forgotten and hidden away. It had that feeling I still love now: old places holding stories, quiet corners with secrets, and the idea that curiosity can open doors you didn’t even know were there.

I think that book helped spark my love of writing. Not in a grand, dramatic way, but in that small, powerful way a story can get under your skin and leave something behind.

It made me curious about old houses, hidden rooms, gardens gone wild, and the stories people leave behind.

So yes, The Secret Garden surprised me.

It wasn’t just a book about a garden.

It was probably one of the first books that made me realise stories could make ordinary places feel mysterious, alive, and worth exploring.
