What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given? Did you take it?
I’m not sure the most profound turning points in my life came from advice.
People give advice all the time. Some of it is kind. Some of it is useful. Some of it is not useful at all. But the biggest changes in my life didn’t come from someone sitting me down and telling me what to do.
They came from me finally listening to my own ideas.
I created my own path, not because someone handed me a plan, but because I knew the life I wanted had to be built by me. I wanted something different. More honest. More mine. More connected to writing, travel, curiosity, old places, strange stories, freedom, and the quiet stubborn belief that starting again is still allowed.
So did I take the advice?
Not really.
I listened to people. I considered things. I sorted through what was useful and ignored what didn’t fit. But the path I’m on now didn’t come from someone else’s instructions.
It came from me deciding that my own ideas were worth taking seriously.
And honestly, that has probably been more powerful than any advice anyone ever gave me.
